Board and Batten Reveal

I'm SO excited to finally be sharing the finished board and batten with you!

When we last left off, we were ready to paint and thought we could knock out painting in one weekend. Let's laugh at that, ok? :) Thankfully, we had pre-primed boards, but it still took two coats of cutting in and rolling (three coats of rolling in about half the room) to get good coverage. It took 6 hours for each coat because of how much edging there was to do. Jeremy did the first coat on the weekend, then I did the rest during nap times. We tag teamed the pink paint in our typical fashion--I edge, Jeremy rolls, then I touch up. I really love getting to work together on projects with Jeremy! We finished painting last weekend, but there was a lot of clean up and finishing touches left to do.

This weekend, Jeremy reinstalled the quarter round to the baseboards. Because the baseboards are thicker now, he had to make a few minor cuts to get the old quarter round to fit. No big deal, though! Then, I went through and touched up a few spots with paint and Jeremy carried the enitre contents of the garage all the tools he used back to the garage. After the room was emptied, we got down and scrubbed the floors, scraping stray paint off the floor with a food scraper. Then, we declared the whole shebang FINISHED!

Excuse the mix of real camera photos and phone photos. I don't have a wide angle lens and this room is very small, so I had a hard time getting photos of it!

We LOVE how it turned out! Things in the nursery are going so quickly now! We already put up the crib, added the rug and rocker, and are in the middle of assembling her dresser! Now I get to plan the fun decorating stuff! 

We still have a few finishing touches to do in the room that will make the board and batten even prettier! We're going to replace all of the outlets with white outlets (the actual outlets are off white right now) and replace all of the gold knobs and hinges with brushed silver hardware. 

And, in case anyone is wondering, the pink is called Panache Pink by Sherwin Williams. We've been getting the Harmony No-Voc paint from Sherwin Williams ever since we were pregnant with Little Boy and LOVE it. It has such good coverage and hardly any smell!

Board and Batten Installation: Day 5

Guess what, folks?! We're done with the initial install! Can I get a woot woot?!

Hubby only had one wall left and a tiny bit of trim next to the door to finish today. He was able to knock it out in just a couple of hours. It was another doozy of a wall, though, as the floor sloped away by 3/4"! To make everything look right, he had to hang the baseboard exactly level, then hang the top board 3/8" lower than it should have been. But, despite the crooked wall, the board and batten looks nice and straight. And did I mention, it's done?!

As promised, here's a close up of how Jeremy notched the corner of the ledge near the walkway with his jigsaw.

Next on the agenda is an overwhelming amount of tedious work--cleaning up insane amounts of sawdust, caulking every.single.board, spackling every.single.nail.hole, reattaching the quarter round, and painting. I caulked the very small wall behind the door this afternoon and it took me about 20-30 minutes to complete. At that rate, I'll be about 97 when we're done. ;)

Board and Batten Installation: Day 4

Catch up on Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3!

Let's just call today "Setbacks", shall we? My poor hubby. About two hours into the day, he was making great progress and had all of the vertical boards cut and nailed to one of the longer walls. He went to put on the top board and this is what he saw.

Totally not cool. He checked his measurements, but from the floor to the top of the vertical boards on both walls was 50". See? Proof! His measurements were spot on!

So what happened?! Why were the boards not lining up?!

Come to find out, the house has settled in that corner some (Our house isn't ancient, but at 15 years old, it isn't a baby either, so you naturally get some settling.) and near that corner of the room, the floor is 1/2" lower than the rest of the room. Grrr!

I felt terrible for Jeremy, because after 2 hours of work, the only thing he could do was rip all of the vertical boards he'd just finished installing off of the wall. This time, he installed the top board before the vertical boards, lining up the top board with the joining top board from the other wall. He was able to salvage the vertical boards by using his Dremel to cut the nails off. Then, he  used his circular saw to re-cut the vertical boards to fit in between the baseboard and top board. To get the boards to fit and accommodate the sloped floor, each board was a different measurement, all off from each other by about 1/4". So irritating. But, he was able to fix that wall in about an hour and a half and kept a good attitude about the whole thing.

After he finished that wall, he completed the wall behind the door easily. He notched the corner of the ledge with his jigsaw so no one would injure themselves on the sharp corner. I'll post a picture of the notched ledge tomorrow.

The next area he tackled was tedious territory. This nook in the room has four doors in it. Yes, four. Between the bathroom door, bedroom door, closet door, and walk out attic door, he had quite a lot to cut around and small spaces to get trim into! He also had to deal with light switches in this section of the room. He cut around the light switches, angling the cuts that directly join with the light switches. We are planning to get new light switches that are built out and chunkier to make them blend in with the board and batten.

Between the lightswitch and that tiny piece in the corner, this small wall was a lot of work!

He also angled the ledge baords near any walkways and where it joined up with door or window moulding...you know, so no one needs to go to the emergency room after bumping into the wall. Haha! :)

Only one wall left, people! Then off to the next steps...spackle, caulk, and paint! SO thankful for this man and all of his hard work!

Board and Batten Installation: Day 3

Well, day three of our board and batten project was a success and went much faster than yesterday! Here's Day 1 and Day 2 in case you missed them. Jeremy was able to finish the other half of the wall with the attic door, the wall with the windows, and several baseboards today! I realized yesterday when I was writing about Day 2 that I had hardly taken any photos. So, to make up for it, today is photo overload! Haha! Of course, you'll have to deal with my mixture of real camera photos and grainy phone photos taken at night. ;)

I won't go into all the details again today since I already wrote them up yesterday, but here's a brief picture walk through of the installation steps.

First, Jeremy measured, cut, and nailed on the baseboards.

Next, he cut, measured and nailed up the vertical boards. He used his spacer board to make them equal distance from each other and checked each board with his level to make sure they were straight before he nailed them on.

The vertical boards that went under the windows were a bit tricky because they were thicker than the window moulding. Jeremy left them straight at the top until the point where the window molding stopped, then did an angle cut so they wouldn't stick straight out. He sanded them with his sander to make them nice and smooth. Here's a close up of how he angled the vertical boards under the window moulding. 

After the verical boards were up, he cut and nailed up the top board, then the ledge, then the moulding to finish it off.

The next two photos are of the baseboards he installed. Oh, and yes, the room is full of sawdust! This is not a neat project, that's for sure!

Board and Batten Installation: Day 2

Well, I'm back to give you a report of day 2 of our board and batten project. If you missed day one, you can find it here.

So, let's just call day 2 "Getting in the Groove Day". It's going slower than anticipated because we had to make a million trips from the garage to bedroom to carry in all the lumber and tools, then we had to stop working for Little Boy's nap (power tools are loud!) and the yard needed to be mowed this afternoon. But, we did get a section finished and developed a good installation system.

Jeremy started next to the crawl out attic door since we wanted the boards to be as tall as the attic door. He installed 1x6 boards for the baseboard, making a 45 degree cut for the corner. He used his nail gun to nail in 2 inch, 16 gauge finish nails.

After the baseboard was on, he cut the top board (1x4 boards) and I held it up flush with the molding around the attic door. We measured the vertical height between the top of the baseboard and the bottom of the top board. Once we had that height measurement, he cut the vertical boards (1x3 boards) to size.

Jeremy used a stud finder to find the studs in the wall and marked them on the walls. Then, he nailed the vertical boards to the studs using his nail gun. After the first two vertical boards were attached to the wall where the stud were, we measured the distance in between the vertical boards. We used that measurement to make a spacer board out of scrap wood so we wouldn't have to remeasure in between each set of vertical boards.

Next, he nailed on the top board, the trim board, and the ledge board (1x2 boards).

He finished one complete section and was able to get some baseboard, a vertical board, and some trim work done on the wall with the windows.

Tomorrow should go much faster now that he's in a rhythm and all his supplies are all ready to go!

Board and Batten Installation- Real Time Blogging: Day 1

I have three blog posts in the works right now, but am going to take a break from my typical blogging to do something a little different. Usually, I show you a room or project from start to finish all in one post. But, Jen over at IHeart Organizing inspired me with her bathroom remodel series to do a real time blog series documenting us installing the board and batten in Little Girl's room. It'll give you a better sense of how projects go, how long they actually take, the giant mess they actually make, what troubles we run into, and the fun of getting it done!

My hubby has a nice, long weekend for Labor Day, so we decided this would be the perfect weekend to tackle the board and batten for Little Girl's room. Too bad I forgot to take a before picture. :( But, here it is after Jeremy removed the baseboards and taped the room so he could prime.

I love these windows!

Jeremy has been putting in 11 hour days at work lately, so he hasn't had much time to do projects. To prep for the board and batten, he worked on Little Girl's room for 10 minutes a night, just to keep moving. Over the course of a week, he finished taping and over the course of the next week, was able to rip off all of the baseboards.

Construction phase started today! Jeremy started off by sanding down the paint line where the wall paint and the baseboards used to meet. It was just enough of a bump that he was afraid the new baseboards wouldn't lay flush against the wall, so he just went over the area with his orbit sander.

After he wiped the dust off the walls from the sander, he started priming the walls to make sure all of the existing green was covered. Here it is all primed! Excuse the phone pictures sprinkled into this post, but I don't have a wide angle lens, so it's impossible to get a picture of the room that's not a close up with my regular camera.

Last step for today was heading to Home Depot to pick up all the lumber he needed for the board and batten. We purchased all pre-primed pine boards. The pre-primed pine boards were actually cheaper than the unfinished pine boards, so getting primed boards was a no brainer! Hooray for not having to prime all that wood and even more hoorays for it actually being the cheaper option! :)
